Ash as a resource
Often discarded as waste from the combustion of biological materials, ash becomes the focus of this project. Traditionally underused, its potential is reimagined as the basis for sustainable material innovation.
A leather alternative
In response to the demand for vegan, eco-friendly materials, the project “Pelnplēve" developed a new material designed to replace leather.
Unique composition and properties
Crafted from ash, water, glycerol, and gelatin—or agar for vegan alternatives—the material is flexible and slightly adhesive. Its reptile-skin-like texture offers both aesthetic appeal and practicality for cutting, sewing, and shaping.
Sustainability through creativity
"Pelnplēve" transforms waste into a versatile, leather-like material, demonstrating how overlooked resources can fuel sustainable design and reduce reliance on animal products.

Fun facts and experience from project
My background in leather design really fueled my fascination with textures, especially exploring vegan leather alternatives like this one.
The whole process of making the ash material was stinky from boiling the ingredients to drying, and even three years later, it still has a lingering odor!
This project deepened my appreciation for innovative materials and how they can challenge traditional leather.
Balancing elasticity with durability was tricky.
