Participation at SaloneSatellite
As a student of the Art Academy of Latvia, I showcased my work at the 2023 Salone del Mobile international design fair. The Academy’s exhibition addressed the rhetorical question posed by SaloneSatellite, “Design, where are you going?”, with a reflective counter-question: “What’s in/on your head?”
Researching contemporary challenges
In preparation for the exhibition, we explored themes reflecting the challenges of modern times. My chosen topic was dying—specifically, the significance of breathing, a process we often overlook yet rely on for life. Every breath connects us to the present, urging us to appreciate life’s fleeting beauty before our final exhale.
Design inspired by life’s last breaths
I designed a crown inspired by hospital IV poles and plastic bags, evoking the fragility of life. Each crown incorporated a cast face of an artist, mounted on a metal rod with a weighted base. The rods wobbled, simulating the instability of breath and the delicate balance of existence.
A Symbol of presence and impermanence
My work invites viewers to reflect on the value of each breath and the beauty of being present. It’s a reminder to cherish the moments we have and recognize the profound connection between life, art, and mortality.
